Wait list blow out leaves tens of thousands waiting for surgery

A more than 10 per cent blow out in the number of people waiting for surgery in WA shows a hospital sector under stress, according to Shadow Minister for Health Sean L’Estrange.

Figures show that by July 2018 the number of people waiting for elective surgery, through the public health system in WA, had increased by 10.8 per cent compared to July 2017, with 23,464 people on the wait list.

Mr L’Estrange said it was even more disturbing that the number of people who failed to receive their surgery within the recommended time had increased by 28.6 per cent.

“The McGowan Government is well aware of the pressure our hospital system is under and yet it is not looking for solutions to ensure people get to have their surgery within the recommended timeframes,” Mr L’Estrange said.
