Vermin and wild dog control needed on crown land

The Shadow Minister for Agriculture Ian Blayney has called on the McGowan Government to control vermin and wild dogs on crown land.

Mr Blayney said many farmers living next door to Parks and Wildlife (DPAW) properties were fighting a losing battle against the incursion of wild dogs.

“Many of these farmers are laying baits on a daily basis and are still unable to prevent large numbers of stock deaths caused by wild dog attacks,” Mr Blayney said.

“Wild dogs living and breeding on Kadji Kadji Station near Morawa are having a profound effect on the livelihood of nearby farmers.

“I have had one farmer report to me that eight of his 18 sheep killed were killed in one evening.

“Local biosecurity groups have implemented some aerial and ground-based baiting with limited success but DPAW needs to make a more concerted effort to ensure crown properties are not safe breeding ground and home to packs of wild dogs.”

Mr Blayney said he had written to Environment Minister Stephen Dawson with his concerns and to request more assistance from DPAW to control wild dogs and vermin on crown land under his department’s control.
