Shadow Agriculture Minister to spruik WA wheat in China

Shadow Agriculture and Food Minister Ian Blayney leaves today with a delegation of 14 wheat industry stakeholders to promote Western Australian wheat to markets and manufacturers in China.

Mr Blayney said he would join wheat breeders, growers, millers, and staff from Curtin University, on the six-day study tour and trade mission which would also investigate the potential for developing a Chinese noodle factory in WA.

“China buys almost $1 billion worth of wheat, barley and other cereal grains from WA every year; the importance of this market cannot be overstated,” Mr Blayney said.

“China is our biggest trading partner and a very valuable long-term customer for West Australian agricultural products.”

Mr Blayney said the tour would conduct workshops to report sensory panel results and wheat quality requirements for Chinese products, and to conduct a trade mission of growers, millers, and processors.

“While in China we will visit a bread and dumpling factory, wheat mill, noodle factory, several universities and tour wheat fields,” Mr Blayney said.

“This is my third visit to China since becoming the Member for Geraldton, and the first since becoming the Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food; Fisheries; and Forestry and I’m excited to be visiting these important Chinese companies and institutions.”
