Premier must deliver on his promise to reduce ice use in WA
The failure of the McGowan Government’s Methamphetamine Action Plan has seen ice use in WA continue to rise, according to Shadow Minister for Mental Health Sean L’Estrange.
“Mark McGowan fronted West Australians more than a year ago with his 10-page Methamphetamine Action Plan which he said was ‘the most comprehensive plan to tackle methamphetamine use ever released in WA’ and yet today we see figures showing ice use in regional WA is double the national average,” Mr L’Estrange said.
“The McGowan Action Plan stated: ‘Reducing the level of methamphetamine use in the community will be one of the KPIs by which the new government will be measured’.
“On this measure, the McGowan Government has failed to deliver a satisfactory result.”
Mr L’Estrange said the plan specifically promised additional services in rural and regional areas, including specialised rehabilitation centres in the South West and the Kimberley, however no money was allocated to start construction on either of these much-needed centres in last year’s budget.
“This Government has clearly got its priorities wrong, splashing $39 million around through its Local Projects, Local Jobs slush fund for projects like coffee vans when it should be tackling the meth problem in WA,” Mr L’Estrange said.
The Opposition calls on the Government to get serious about tackling the scourge of methamphetamine and to deliver on its commitments.
