Peel Health Campus Rally
The Emergency Department and elective surgery waiting times at the Peel Health Campus require budget attention, according to Shadow Minister for Health; Mental Health, Mr Sean L’Estrange MLA.
“The doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and staff at the Peel Health Campus do tremendous work in caring for local Peel residents. We want to make sure they are resourced appropriately so that the workplace can deliver health services to a high standard.”
“The WA Emergency Access Target is 90%. The Peel Health Campus performance has dropped from 76.7% in 2013/14 to 65.9% in 2016/17. This is a drop of 14.1% over four years. If the Government does not address this drop in performance, it will put increased pressure on staff who won’t be resourced to deliver the best Emergency Department services to locals.”
“The trends for elective surgery waiting times are also worrying. While the hospital overall still performs below maximum recommended times, and better than peer group median times, trends have seen median waiting times increase by 237.5% between 2013/14 and 2016/17 for category 2 surgery and by 242.8% between 2015/16 and 2016/17 for category 3 surgery.”
“With an already large proportion of the population aged 60 years and over in this district, and a forecast population growth of 2.2% per annum over the next three years to 2020/21, it is imperative that the Government correct these trends to ensure optimal delivery of services. If the trends continue, an increasing number of people will miss out on effective Emergency Department services, will have to wait longer for their surgery, or may not receive their surgery within the recommended time.”
“In recent media articles, the Minister has confirmed the hospital needs a physical expansion to meet the demands of the increasing population. The Government needs to invest in medical services for Peel to slash waiting times and improve Emergency Department performance while also planning for the long-term health needs of the region”.
