Opposition calls for review of McGinty board appointment

Shadow Minister for Health Sean L’Estrange today called on the State Government to review the appointment of former Labor health minister Jim McGinty to the position of Chairman of the North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS).

Mr L’Estrange said "The recent Corruption and Crime Commission report into the NMHS found corrupt activity occurred, in part, between 2003 and 2008, when Mr McGinty was the Minister for Health.

"Is it appropriate for Mr McGinty to hold the position of Chairman of the NMHS, while the current Labor Minister for Health was dealing with some of the findings and recommendations of the CCC report which occurred in the NMHS while Mr McGinty was the Minister? Mr L’Estrange said

Before retiring in 2009, Mr McGinty was a State Labor Member of Parliament for almost 20 years, during which time he served as Minister for Health, Attorney General and Opposition Leader.

“A conflict of interest in dealing with the CCC report could exist while Mr McGinty remains as chair of the NMHS,” Mr L’Estrange said.

“Even before the CCC report was handed down, the Australian Medical Association of WA expressed disappointment that the Government had not chosen someone more independent of the Government to be Chair of the NMHS.
