More uncertainty for family centres ahead of Christmas
Minister for Community Services Simone McGurk needs to step up and end the six months of uncertainty to neighbourhood family centres across Western Australia as a result of its unresolved funding agreements.
Shadow Minister for Community Services Alyssa Hayden said the State Opposition was receiving feedback from neighbourhood family centres expressing concern about the lack of certainty about their future.
“The Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre have reached out to me to express their dismay and heartache over the ongoing indecisiveness by Minister McGurk,” Mrs Hayden said.
“My State colleagues are receiving similar feedback from centres within their electorates.
“Like the many neighbourhood family centres across WA, the Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre offers a range of services which include child care, arts and craft classes, workshops to develop computer skills and making local environment friendly shopping bags.
“The future of these centres have been up in the air for near on six months and they simply should not have to continue to operate under these stressful circumstances.
“The Minister is putting hundreds of families across the State in limbo as they remain uncertain about whether they need to find a new childcare provider and if they do, finding a new provider does require time and research.”
Mrs Hayden also stated that workshops that are held at the centres are very well received and needed in the community as they provide a hub for the local community and for seniors which delivers computer training, cyber-crime awareness and how to keep fit and healthy at the same time as socialising and forming new friendships.
“The Minister needs to make a decision and end this stress, uncertainty and the unnecessary heartache ahead of Christmas.”
