McGowan Government must deliver its own promises to seniors

Minister for Seniors and Ageing Mick Murray’s call for the Federal Government’s royal commission into aged care to include examining the financial arrangements around lifestyle villages is a cover up for the McGowan Government’s failure to deliver on its promise to legislate protections.

In July 2017, the McGowan Government announced it would introduce legislative amendments to strengthen the Residential Parks (Long-Stay Tenants) Act to protect residents of lifestyle villages and long-stay parks, which Commerce and Industrial Relations Minister Bill Johnston said were “mostly seniors” in “a vulnerable situation”.

Shadow Minister for Commerce Michael Mischin said West Australian seniors should not have to wait for the conclusion of the royal commission to get protections Minister Johnston promised them over a year ago.

“Instead of owning the solution it went to the media with last year, Minister Johnston decided
to get his colleague, Minister Murray to push responsibility onto the Federal Government,”
Mr Mischin said.

Shadow Minister for Seniors and Ageing Alyssa Hayden said the WA Liberal Opposition welcomed the Federal Government’s Royal Commission but the McGowan Government must not be allowed to use it to offload its own responsibilities in the sector.

“Issues around ownership in lifestyle villages, park homes and retirement villages sits within
the regulatory remit of the McGowan Government, which must deal with them as it promised,”
Ms Hayden said.

“It was disappointing to hear Minister Murray say on radio today that he heard stories about failures in the aged care system on a daily basis but then not outline any action his Government had taken to address these issues.

“It’s easy to see what this Government has as its priority when you look at the ‘200 Fresh Ideas’ Mark McGowan took to the last election.

“Not a single one of those ‘ideas’ was about improving the lives of senior West Australians; however there were four ideas to improve the lives of dogs in Western Australia.

“They know that our elderly are being abused and need protection, which is why they promised legislative protection last year, but as per what is usual for this Government: they are all promises and no action.”
