Liberals will keep Moora Residential College open
The WA Liberals have called on the McGowan Government to keep the Moora Residential College and other education centres open, following its decision to reverse its cuts to Community Resource Centres.
Opposition Leader Mike Nahan told the WA Liberal Conference today that if the McGowan Government did not reverse their decision to close Moora Residential College, the Liberals will re-open Moora Residential College if they are elected at the next election.
“The McGowan Government has been doing its level best to take the education sector backwards, with its cuts to Community Kindergartens, cuts to funding for the Landsdale Farm School and Herdsman Wildlife Centre, cuts to funding for a range of high schools across the state and closing the Moora Residential College,” Dr Nahan said.
“Just this week Education Minister Sue Ellery said parents should be able to choose where they send their children to school, while Minister MacTiernan claimed the Government had listened to regional community concerns about the future of Community Resource Centres.
“It’s now time for the McGowan Government to listen to the parents of the students of Moora Residential College, reverse their rushed decision and announce that it will be kept open.
Shadow Education Minister Donna Faragher said an immediate decision by the McGowan Government to reverse the closure of the residential college and the other remaining cuts was important.
“The McGowan Government has shown that they can change their mind when they have got it manifestly wrong,” Mrs Faragher said.
“Reversing the decision to close the college and all the other unnecessary education cuts is the right and only decision to make.
“I urge Minister Ellery and the Premier to listen to the community and support these critical education services in regional and metropolitan Western Australia. There is no excuse for not acting immediately.”
