Liberals welcome federal investment in Western Australia

Today’s announcement of additional Federal Liberal Government funding for infrastructure projects across Western Australia has been welcomed by the State Liberal Opposition.

Opposition Leader Mike Nahan said he was pleased to see significant investment in projects that would boost employment, reduce congestion and expand three major hospitals.

“The investment by the Turnbull Government builds on the $55 billion of investment in infrastructure by the former Liberal Government which transformed our State,” Dr Nahan said.

“The former Government invested significantly in building our hospital network, building new schools, improving our road and public transport infrastructure, future-proofing our water and power infrastructure and transforming Perth from Dullsville to a vibrant, modern and progressive city.

“All credit for this new investment goes to the Federal Government. They have ensured we have a strong Federal economy to drive the revenue to fund these projects.

“With the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data showing that, in seasonally adjusted terms, more West Australian were looking for work in March 2018 than at any time since records began in 1978, this investment by the Federal Government is important and I thank them for it.”

Dr Nahan said the State Government still needed to make public business cases for the projects it had deemed urgent.

“In the forthcoming state budget, we will be keen to see how the State Government will fund its share of the capital component of these projects without increasing debt,” Dr Nahan said.

“At the election, the Government made commitments to infrastructure projects and said it could fund them while also paying down debt, the Liberal Opposition will hold them to account for those commitments.

“The Federal Government has delivered significant funding to these projects, the McGowan Government now needs to outline to Western Australians how they will fund their share, without increasing taxes or introducing new taxes and without increasing debt.”
