Jobs data shows Government needs to do more

Latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the McGowan Government needs a serious and comprehensive jobs plan, the Opposition said today.

Shadow Treasurer Dean Nalder said Western Australia has the highest unemployment rate in the nation with 9,000 fewer West Australians employed in full-time work compared to one year ago.

“While seasonally adjusted unemployment has decreased 0.2 per cent from 6.3 per cent to 6.1 per cent, we have the highest rate in the nation with NSW leading the nation at 4.8 per cent followed by Victoria (5.3%), South Australia (5.6%),Tasmania (6.0%) and Queensland (6.1%),” Mr Nalder said.

“We are of course pleased there has been a reduction in unemployment, albeit a very small reduction, but when our performance is compared to every other state, it is clear more needs to be done to create long term, sustainable employment opportunities.

“The McGowan Government was elected on a jobs platform, but they have failed to deliver on their plan and we are seeing this in a lack of retail spending, lower tourism numbers and uncertainty surrounding personal finances and job prospects.

“The Government must take responsibility for the highest unemployment rate in the nation.

“Many of the decisions they have made since being elected have had a direct impact on our economy, consumer confidence and jobs.

“Whether it is the $700 increase to household fees and charges reducing discretionary spend; the removal of the First Home Owner grant boost which has seen housing approvals fall; or the changes to the Western Australian skilled migration list which has cost the WA economy hundreds of millions of dollars in lost student enrolments and associated tourist visits, these are all considered and deliberate decisions of the McGowan Government that have had a deleterious economic impact.”

Mr Nalder said the Government needed to boost confidence in the economy by making decisions that would support investment and jobs in Western Australia.

“The Premier must outline a clear vision for creating an environment for the private sector to have the confidence to invest in Western Australia and create long term sustainable jobs,” Mr Nalder said.

“All we have seen since the Government was elected are decisions that have harmed the economy and cost jobs.”
