Hon Kim Beazley, AC

The State Opposition has welcomed the appointment of Hon Kim Beazley as Western Australia’s next Governor, saying while he has political affiliations, he has the experience, influence, international reputation and respect to fulfil the role with aplomb.

Opposition Leader Mike Nahan said it would be important Mr Beazley used his international connections to promote the interests of Western Australia.

“Mr Beazley is respected across the political spectrum. He was a very good Ambassador to the United States of America, having been appointed by the Rudd Government and re-appointed by the Abbott Government,” Dr Nahan said.

“Mr Beazley can certainly project Western Australia onto the international stage. Our state has matured over the last decade such that we can now attract more interest from other nations and their people.

“He has promoted global free trade more so than the current State Government and their federal counterparts, and his opposition to protectionism is consistent with State and Federal Liberal policies.

“We wish Mr Beazley well and look forward to him promoting the interests of Western Australia.”

Dr Nahan thanked current Governor Kerry Sanderson, Western Australia’s first female Governor.

“Ms Sanderson has been an outstanding Governor for Western Australia and a role model for all, not just for being our first female Governor, but through her leadership and success in the corporate sector and public service,” Dr Nahan said.

“Western Australia has been well served by Ms Sanderson and on behalf of the Liberal Party and all Western Australians, I thank her for her service to our great state and wish her well for the future.”
